Hello! Welcome to 5th and 6th Grade!
I'm Mary Seleen and I'm very happy to be part of the St. Joseph family. This is my fourth year at St. Joseph School, but I have over 25 years of experience teaching in Catholic schools in the Green Bay and La Crosse areas. I'm a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and have Wisconsin DPI certifications in Elementary Education and Reading. My husband and I live in Green Bay with our dog, Katy. We have two kids. Our son and his family live in Milwaukee and our daughter lives in New Orleans. You can contact me at school or at firstname.lastname@example.org
Service Project for St. John Homeless Shelter
We are once again making scarves for people who use the services of St. John Homeless Shelter. We spent three Arts Integration class periods working on them with guidance from Mrs. Radue and me. The looms (they belong to Mrs. Radue) and yarn were then sent home to be completed on the knitter's own time. I'd like them completed by the end of November so we can get them to the people who need them before the really cold weather sets in. Scarves should be at least 5 feet long. Don't worry about getting them off the looms Mrs. Radue or I can help with that and final finishing work.
(P.S. Parents- the looms are kind of fun and I find knitting good therapy while watching Packers games. It gives me something to do with my hands instead of throwing things at the TV)

EVERYBODY NEEDS TO READ!!!
To encourage that lifelong reading habit, students are asked to read at least 20 minutes each night. Just about any type of reading material counts; the lit circle novel, the newspaper, a favorite magazine, or a book for Genre Bingo. The SSR Log is to help keep track of that at home reading. Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night for 5 nights each week or a total of 100 minutes each week. SSR Logs will be collected at the end of each month and a participation grade will be given.
Genre Bingo Challenge
We’re going to be doing a lot of reading this year; some will be assigned to the whole class, some will be done for a small group or literature circles, and some will be books that students will choose on their own- Student Selected Reading. At the end of each quarter we’ll be sharing one of those SSR books with the class in a Book Talk- more about those later. So we don’t get in a rut with SSR and keep reading the same kind of books all the time, we’re taking the Genre Bingo Challenge. Students have a 4 x 4 bingo sheet listing different types of literature. Each Book Talk selection must be from a different literary genre. As Book Talks are completed, students color in the space on the Bingo Challenge Sheet. Can you read four across, up and down, or diagonally?
