Parent Guidelines
Parents are encouraged to make thoughtful choices when sending snacks for the school day. Snacks should make a positive contribution to children’s diet and health, with an emphasis on serving fruits and vegetables as the primary snack and water as the primary beverage. Teachers may provide a suggested list for snack and birthday celebration options. Our After School program encourages and supports the healthy snack options by families as well. A suggested list of healthy snack options are shared with families.
School Wellness Policy
Children need access to healthy foods and opportunities to be physically active in order to grow, learn and thrive. Good health fosters student attendance and education. With the future in mind where obesity rates have doubled in children and tripled in adolescents over the last two decades, (with physical inactivity and excessive calorie intake the predominant causes), St. Joseph School is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children’s health, well-being and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity.
Therefore, it is the policy of St. Joseph School, Inc. that:
The school will engage students, parents, teachers, food service directors and others interested, in developing, implementing and monitoring school-wide nutrition and physical activity policies.
All students in PreK 3 through grade 8 will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis.
Foods and beverages sold or served at school will meet the nutrition recommendations of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Food service professionals will provide students with access to a variety of affordable, nutritious, and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs.
Our school will provide clean, safe, and pleasant settings and adequate time for students to eat.
Our school will participate in available federal school meal programs, including the National School Lunch Program.
Our school will provide nutritional education and physical education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity, and will establish connections between health education and school meal programs.
